24 Month Clinical Evaluation of Cercon Zirconia All Ceramic Restorations
D.M. BARNES, A. ARRIBAS, J. GINGELL, J. RAJASKI, V. SUNDAR, and P. WARREN, University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, USA | Objectives: The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate Cercon zirconia all-ceramic restorations (Dentsply Prosthetics) when used in conjunction with Dyract Cem Plus self-adhesive compomer luting cement (Dentsply Prosthetics). Methods: 77 posterior and anterior ceramic crowns, 23 all ceramic fixed partial dentures were placed in 56 patients. Standard ceramic preparations were performed followed by conventional polyvinylsiloxane impression techniques using cord retraction. A self-adhesive compomer luting cement was used to insert the restorations following manufacturer's instructions. Restorations were evaluated at baseline (B), 6, and 12 and 24 months using modified Ryge criteria. Results: The restorations showed very little change in all evaluation parameters. The restorations showed no change in color match, marginal discoloration, retention, anatomic form, or secondary caries but did show a slight decrease in alfa percentages for retention (99%) and marginal adaptation (94%). Conclusions: The data supports that there were sufficient shades available to obtain desired esthetic results, with 100% of all restorations being rated alfa for shade match to Vita (Vident) shade guide. Only one restoration still had mild post operative sensitivity at 24 months. One restoration required endodontic therapy and the porcelain fractured off the substructure during access preparation. In addition, 3 out of the 52 crowns recalled failed due to porcelain fracture. All 18 abutments evaluated were clinically acceptable after 24 months. One crown came off and was re-cemented and deemed clinically acceptable. Patients who had a failed restoration received new crowns to remedy the situation. This study was supported by Dentsply Prosthetics. |
