Objectives: The terapeutic effects of antiplaque, anticaries, dessensinbilizant, antiseptic and withening from toothpastes are largely developed and prooved. Furthermore, their effectiveness and safety depends on fluoride contend, antimicrobian components, abrasive capacity and their own fisic and chemical properties, like pH. The purpose of this study was to measure the pH of 22 withening toothpastes.

Methods: The brands selected were: Crest Extra Whitening CM, Crest Whitening Expressions CR, Crest Baking Soda & Peroxide FM, Crest Whitening Plus SCS, Crest Vivid White IM, Crest Plus Scope TCWCPLG, Crest Extra Whitening CMD, Crest Plus Scope TCW, Colgate Sensitive Whitening, Colgate Baking Soda & Peroxide WOBBM, Colgate Ultra Branqueadora, Colgate Simply White Sparkling Mint, Plus White Xtra Whitening, Natural White EWHM, Natural White EWC, Plus White 5 MSWG, Ultrabrite Baking Soda and Peroxide W, Pepsodent Xtra Whitening, Sensodyne Blanqueador plus ACT, Natural White Sensitive WTE, Aquafresh Ultimate White e Advance White. Dilutions of 3g of tooth past in 9 mL of distillate water were used. They were stored at 8 °C and at 37 °C for 12h. The measurements of pH were made 3 times per tooth past in pHmetro digital Quimis, for 60 sec. The t-student test was used for the statistical analysis. The pH of the toothpastes were between 5 and 10.

Results: The most alcaline pH was represented by Colgate Ultra Branqueadora (10,2). Only Plus White 5 MSWG presented a pH slightly acid (3,5). There was no significant difference on the measurements made at 8°C and 37°C.

Conclusions: The withening toothpastes studied showed a pH of 5-10, except for Plus White 5 MSWG, this one was slightly acid (3,5).
