OBJECTIVES: to evaluate the clinical performance of resin composite restorations on cervical lesions with a total-etch one-bottle adhesive system and an one-step self-etch bonding system.

METHODS: Seventy cervical caries-free lesions on buccal surface of canines and pre-molars were restored according to the following situations (n=35): on group 1, after acid etching for 15 seconds (36% phosphoric acid) an one-bottle adhesive system (Prime&Bond NT, Dentsply) was applied as manufactured instructions; on group 2, an one-step self-etch bonding system (Xeno III, Dentsply) applied as manufactured instructions. A microfilled resin composite (Durafil VS, Kulzer) was used as restorative composite for all 70 restorations. All restorations were evaluated after 1 week, at 6 months and after 1 year. The clinical effectiveness was recorded in terms of retention, perfect marginal integrity, absence of clinical microleakage, absence of caries recurrence and absence of post-operative sensitivity. The data were analyzed with a proportion test.

RESULTS: At 6-months after initial placement, 70 restorations (a 100% recall rate) were evaluated. At 1 year 53 restorations (a 83% recall rate) were evaluated. The results in percentages of retention, perfect marginal integrity, absence of clinical microleakage, absence of caries recurrence and absence of post-operative sensitivity were: Prime&Bond NT-6 months: 100%, 89%, 89%, 100%, 89%; Prime&Bond NT- 1-year: 88%, 82%, 82%, 100%,83%; Xeno III - 6 months: 98%, 89%, 89%, 100%, 83%; Xeno III - 1-year: 96%, 81%, 81%, 100%,87%. No differences between both groups were found for the diverse parameters evaluated.

CONCLUSION: The clinical performance of the one-bottle self-etch adhesive Xeno III was similar to a total-etch one-bottle acetone-based adhesive system Prime&Bond NT tested.
