Coffee Stain Resistance and Enamel Bond Strength of Surface Sealant

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of coffee on the color change of 11 surface sealants.  The adhesion of these surface sealants to enamel was also evaluated by measuring the shear bond strength (SBS) to these substrates.  METHODS: Surface sealants used were Lasting Touch by Dentsply Caulk, Biscover, Biscover LV, Fortify by Bisco, G-Coat by GC, Gloss N Seal by Denmat, Seal N Shine by Pulpdent, Durafinish by Parkell, Optiguard by Kerr, PermaSeal by Ultradent, and Surface Coat by Kuraray.  30 disk-shaped specimens (Φ20 x 1mm) made from Esthet-X flow BW were divided into 11 groups (n=11).  Each group was coated with different surface sealants and cured according to the Direction for Use of the product.  The air-inhibited layer was removed with alcohol before specimens were immersed in coffee solution.  Color of the specimens was measured with a reflection spectrophotometer using CIE L* A* B* at baseline.  The color differences (Delta E) were calculated after 24 hours of immersion.   5 teeth each for enamel were etched with 34% phosphoric acid conditioner and coated with 9 surface sealants. Gelatin capsule matrix cylinders of TPH composite resin were bonded to each enamel bonding site.  The specimens were loaded to failure at a speed of 5 mm/min. RESULTS:

CONCLUSIONS: The stain resistance of Lasting Touch was superior to other surface sealants tested.  Shear bond strength of Lasting Touch, Biscover are significantly better than Biscover LV, Fortify, Seal N Shine and Optiguard.
