M.P. BOSMA1, D. TARGETT1, J. DUROCHER2, C.J. KLEBER3, and K.R. MILLEMAN3, 1GlaxoSmithKline, Weybridge, United Kingdom, 2GlaxoSmithKline, Parsippany, NJ, USA, 3University Park Research Center, Fort Wayne, IN, USA | Objectives: To evaluate the consumers' perception of tooth brightening and the
degree of tooth whitening as graded by the dental professional after 2 days of
use of a hydrogen peroxide gel formulation in subjects who have previously
bleached their teeth. Methods: This was a randomized, parallel group,
examiner-blinded study to investigate the subjective “brightening“ response and
the examiner Vita Shade assessment after using an 11.2% hydrogen peroxide (w/w)
predosed gel in tray Aquafresh® White Trays TM ReviveTM
(AWTR) for 45 minutes once daily and subjects' own toothpaste or subjects' own paste
only for respectively 1, 2 and 3 days. Only subjects with a Vita Shade score of
A1 and greater and who had bleached their teeth within the last four years were
included in the study. AWTR was used for 3 days. All subjects
brushed twice daily for one minute using their own toothpaste and toothbrush. Compliance, oral soft tissue tolerance and toothsensitivity were
daily monitored during the study. Results: When used over a three day
period, AWTR produced statistically significant consumer noticeable brightness
and examiner quantifiable whitening in subjects who had previously bleached
their teeth after 1, 2 and 3 days use, respectively, compared to the
brushing-only group. The number and type of oral findings were similar to what
has been reported with the use of marketed whitening products. Conclusion:
A predosed gel in tray can be used for two days to whiten teeth in people who
have previously used OTC and professional whitening treatments.
