TMD signs and symptoms in young people

Objectives: TMD signs and symptoms in children and adolescents were envolved in an University TMD and Orofacial Pain ambulatory (UNIFESP – Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Methods:The sample were 56 examined patients (39 female and 17 male), aged 6 up to 17 years old, in the 2006 to 2007. The data were obtained by calibrated dentistrys, using the Research Diagnosis Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) axis I.

Results: The retrospective study showed the following results: higher prevalence of signs and symptoms in girls (70%), orofacial pain was the complaint considered as inclusion factor of the simple. Clicking was found in 18% of the patients, 96% referred parafunctional habits and 93% presented pain in temporal and masseter muscles.

Conclusions: These results are similar to that found in adults population with TMD.
