Advances in Imaging Hard Tissues in vivo |
Sponsored by: Craniofacial Biology, Implantology Research, Mineralized Tissue |
Description: Until recently, all bone imaging processes involved histological preparation and 2D analysis of bone structure. Micro-CT has revolutionized our ability to analyze bone in 3D. Dr. Rowe will talk about his data on the differentiation and function of bone cells in vivo, generated using fluorescent labeling of living cells in bone. Dr. Dallas will present her data generated through the pioneering method of imaging cells in hard tissues, and watching their development and differentiation over time. Dr. Dechow will discuss his use of micro-CT to examine the orientation of Haversian systems in cortical bone, and how bone biomechanics relates to 3D cortical bone structure. Dr. Feng will present information on the fine detail of cellular processes within hard tissues. This symposium is aimed at basic and clinical scientists, to demonstrate the potential of these powerful new imaging modalities. These presentations should generate excellent opportunities for collaboration between groups interested in a variety of aspects of bone development, growth and function. Educational objectives are 1) to expose researchers to new imaging modalities, 2) demonstrate how these tools are used to answer scientific questions, and 3) provide opportunities for collaborations with experts in the use of these techniques for increasing our understanding of bone biology. |
