Bioactive and Caries-inhibiting Resin-based Materials

Sponsored by: Cariology Research, Dental Materials, Academy of Dental Materials
Description: Secondary caries at the tooth-restoration margins is the most-frequent reason for replacement of restorations. Replacement dentistry accounts for 70% of all operative work and costs $5 billion/year in the U.S. alone. This symposium will address a new generation of bioactive and caries-inhibiting resin-based dental materials, their potential clinical applications and caries inhibition, mineral formation and antimicrobial properties, and processing-structure-property relationships. The topics described are 1) sub-micron-sized bioactive glass particulates created by the sol-gel process and their use in polymer-based systems to produce dentin desensitizers and bonding agents, as well as dental restorative materials, 2) the potential therapeutic value via a combination of fluoride and chlorhexidine in typical dental resins with release at desired rates in the oral environment, 3) Ca-PO4-ion releasing biomaterials as candidate pulp-capping, orthodontic cements, and for the atraumatic restorative treatment of diseased teeth, 4) novel nanocomposites with Ca and PO4 release to inhibit caries and mechanical properties matching commercial stress-bearing, non-releasing composites. All these topics promise revolutionary advances in development of novel dental materials which contribute to better prognosis of restorative treatments.
