Host Immunotherapeutic Approaches for the Treatment of Periodontal Diseases |
Sponsored by: Microbiology / Immunology and Infection Control, Periodontal Research |
Description: Immunotherapeutic approaches for periodontal therapy provide options to control exuberant host responses in patients highly susceptible to periodontitis. The implications of periodontal microbiota-associated virulence factors such as LPS on the induction of the innate immune response, toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling, generation of pattern-associate molecular patterns (PAMPs) and their role in periodontal disease pathogenesis are crucial to the extent of disease severity. This symposium will discuss some of the mechanisms in which p38 MAPK regulates inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases in periodontal tissues. Presentations will also highlight the role of T cells and dendritic-T cell interactions as they respond to periodontal infection. The role of host response factors in blocking periodontal disease progression such as lipoxins and osteoprotegerin will be discussed. Future applications of these approaches will be highlighted in preclinical and clinical arenas. Level of Investigator targeted: Research trainees and researchers Goal: To inform clinical and basic researchers on current and future host modulation therapies for periodontal disease treatment. Educational objectives: 1. Provide an overview on the state of the art of periodontal host immunotherapeutics for blocking periodontal disease progression 2. Instruct the audience on key signaling pathways driving periodontal disease pathogenesis that have been exploited with novel therapeutics. 3. Inform the audience of the critical aspects of dendritic cell and T-cell mediated control of periodontal disease initiation and progression. |
