Improving Oral Health and Promoting the Well-being of the Geriatric Population: Education Research Issues

Sponsored by: Education Research, Geriatric Oral Research
Description: In 2005 the World Health Organisation outlined priorities for geriatric oral health (Peterson and Yamamoto, Community Dent Oral Epidemiol 33:81-92). Limited research has been undertaken in the educational aspects of geriatric oral health care in undergraduate, formal postgraduate and continuing education and continuing professional development. It is timely now to reassess the existing educational systems and training needs of those serving increasingly elderly societies. The presentations in this symposium will analyse the relationships of educational systems to the continuum of care for older adults and sustainable health promotion and service delivery. Teaching, learning and assessment from the perspectives of researching contemporary issues and the components of mainstream and specialist education will be described and challenges and opportunities for educational research to improve the oral health and promote the well being of the geriatric population considered. The symposium is aimed at investigators of all levels and it is anticipated that interest will be stimulated and future work facilitated, in an emerging research area of high importance.
