Local Anesthesia: New and Improved? |
Sponsored by: Dental Anesthesiology Research, Pharmacology, Therapeutics, & Toxicology |
Description: Although local anesthetics have been used for over 100 years to alleviate pain and provide regional anesthesia during painful procedures, recent research has led to new drug mechanisms, effects, and FDA approvals. This symposium will provide an update on what is new with local anesthesia. The symposium will kick off with an overview of the mechanisms of action of local anesthetics by Dr. John Yagiela as a basis for understanding newly discovered effects and applications for local anesthesia. Data comparing the effectiveness of articaine vs lidocaine will be presented by Dr. John Meechan and data for articaine with epinephrine 1:100,000 versus 1:200,000 will be presented by Dr. Paul Moore. Dr. Raymond Dionne will present new data on an unexpected effect of bupivacaine that may increase rather than relieve pain. Lastly the mechanisms of and applications for phentolamine-mediated reversal of local anesthesia will be presented. Dr. Paul Moore will present pharmacokinetic changes in lidocaine after phentolamine and Dr. Elliot Hersh will present efficacy data for phentolamine. Each speaker will present for 10 minutes, with main topic blocks followed by a five minute discussion period for a total of 85-90 minutes. This cross-cutting topic will be of interest to researchers and clinicians at all levels. Attendees will: 1) learn novel mechanisms of action for the most commonly used drug in the dental office, local anesthetic; 2) evaluate newly discovered benefits and risks for local anesthesia; 3)learn more about therapeutic acceleration of recovery from soft tissue anesthesia; and 4) gain new knowledge to apply to their research and clinical practice.
The program is supported in part by an educational donation from Novalar Pharmaceuticals, Inc and Dentsply Pharmaceuticals. |
