Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial effects of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) and MTAD on Entrococcus faecalis contaminated root canals of human extracted teeth based on an in vitro study.

Materials and Methods: Seventy human intact extracted teeth included maxillary and mandibular incisors and premolars with single and straight root canals were selected. The teeth were divided in to 5 groups according to a simple random selection: Positive Control (n=5), Negative Control (n=5), 2.5% NaOCl-BOJENE Home Bleaching Iran- (n=20), 2% CHX-Daroo Pakhsh Iran -(n=20), MTAD-DENTSPLY TULSA DENTAL USA- (n=20) .Each tooth was instrumented using hand and rotary devices. E. faecalis incubated into the canals and grew for a period of four weeks. Then canals were irrigated using three mentioned materials for 5 minutes. Samples were taken from the wall of canals and transferred into BHI culture medium and placed in an incubator at 37¢ªc for 96 hours. After this period of time bacteriological evaluation was done. Data analysis was done by means of Chi-Square test and SPSS Software.

Results: Bacteriological growth was seen in only one sample of MTAD group (5%), but in 4 of CHX group (20%) and 5 0f NaOCl group (25%) with no statistically differences between groups(p<0.05).

Conclusion: Based on our results, it seems that all three materials have acceptable antimicrobial effect on E. faecalis and there are no statistically differences between the amounts of their efficiencies.
