Effects of Oradex, Gengigel Salviathymol N Mouthwash on Dental Plaque

F. AL-BAYATY, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The objective: of this research is to compare the antibacterial effects of Gengigel (0.025% hyaluronic acid based), Oradex (0.12% chlorhexidine) and Salviathymol N (1% essential oils based) mouthwashes on certain dental plaque bacteria ,to assess the morphological changes by using Scanning Electron Microscope, and to evaluate the antibacterial effects on pool sample of dental plaque. Material &Method: Experimental Microorganisms include Fusobacterium nucleatum, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus constellatus, Eikenella corrodens, dental plaque cultured aerobically and anaerobically, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli used as internal control. Screening of antibacterial activity was done by disk diffusion test. Minimum inhibitory concentration test and assessment of bacteria morphology by Scanning Electron Microscopy was carried out. Results: shows that Oradex has a higher antibacterial effect , followed by Salviathymol N,Gengigel mouthwash seems to have weak antibacterial effects against tested microorganisms and dental plaque pool samples.SEM observation demonstrate that chlorhexidine shows obvious changes, Salviathymol N Shows some changes while Gengigel represent mild changes on bacterial morphology of the tested microorganisms. Conclusion: Oradex posses the strongest, Salviathymol N shows moderate, Gengigel demonstrate weak antibacterial activity.
