Classification and Management of Chronic Sialadenitis of the Parotid Gland

S. WANG, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China

Chronic sialadenitis of the parotid gland (CSPG) is often seen in the clinic, sometimes also referred to as recurrent pyogenic parotitis, sialadenitis, recurrent parotitis, or non-obstructive parotitis, among other terms. The literature describes several different classifications and denominations for CSPG. These various classifications and denominations complicate the definition and diagnostic criteria, and the relationship between chronic sialadenitis of the parotid gland and Sjogren syndrome remains unclear. Treatment of this disorder is also a challenging problem.

Objectives: To review and evaluate the classification and treatment principles for CSPG.

Methods: Here we review the presented classification and denomination of CSPG, evaluate a classification for this disorder proposed from Chinese research team in 1996, and discuss the treatment principles for this disorder.

Results: A classification proposed from Chinese research team in 1996 is based on the disease entities identified in a more than 10 years long-term follow-up investigation. Compared with the presented designation and classification of CSPG, this classification has relatively clear definition and diagnostic criteria, is relatively easy to be used in clinic. This classification can be also applied as a guide in the selection of treatment modality.

Conclusion: The classification proposed by Chinese research team is considered to reflect the disease entities and to be easily used. It is a good choice to apply this classification in clinic.
