OBJECTIVE:This study was designed to assessment of the association between denture plaque and colony forming unit(CFU)of candida albicans in patients reffered to dental university of shahid beheshti.

MATERIAL AND METHODS:32 patients, aged 39-80 years, were visited by a dentist and studied microbiologically.12 patients had denture stomatitis{7Denture Stomatitis(DS) type I,5DS II}and 20 were healthy.Samples for microbiological studies were taken by swab and in normal salin to mycology laboratory and cultured at dextrose saboured agar for counting colonies of candida albicans. From each sample,a smear was prepared for microscopic study.

In clinical study, plaque of each denture, was stained with erythrosine dye and the quantitiy of it,was recorded. The results were evaluated with paired T test.

RESULTS:The quantity of denture plaque was not linked to colony count of candida albicans.(p=0/0289).The differences between mean colony count in smear positive and smear negative patients were statistically significant(T test).Stain quantity of denture plaque in patients with DSII was higher than healthy ones.

CONCLUSION:There was not a link between quantity of denture plaque and colony count of candida albicans, but it was significantly associated with pathogen smear.
