Extrinsic stain removal after 1 and 2 week dentifrice use

OBJECTIVE: This clinical study examined extrinsic stain removal after brushing for 1 and 2 weeks with a new variant of Colgate Total (0.3% triclosan, 2% copolymer, advanced silica system) [test] and Crest Fluoride [control] dentifrices. METHODS: At the baseline examination, 20 qualified subjects (age range 22-65 years) completing informed consent were stratified by the lobene stain index into two balanced groups. Volunteers were randomly issued a dentifrice and instructed to brush twice daily. Subjects were recalled after 1 and 2 weeks of dentifrice use for oral examinations and record tooth stain scores. RESULTS: At baseline, no significant differences were observed between the two treatment groups for stain area (p=0.55), intensity (p=0.36) and composite scores (p=0.80). Subjects brushing with the test dentifrice for 1-week demonstrated a statistically significant 31.26% reduction in stain area and 26.41% reduction in stain intensity versus control paste (p<0.01). At the 2-week assessment, brushing with the test dentifrice resulted in a statistically significant 36.22% reduction in stain area and 43.67% reduction in stain intensity versus control paste (p<0.01). Composite stain scores amongst subjects provided the test dentifrice demonstrated statistically significant reductions versus control paste that were 43% and 60.96% respectively at the 1 and 2 week assessments (p<0.001). No adverse events were observed amongst subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Colgate Total (0.3% triclosan, 2% copolymer, advanced silica system) was significantly more effective in reducing extrinsic tooth stains than Crest Regular. Outcomes assessments at 1 and 2 weeks, which are much earlier than conventional recall periods of 1 and 2 months, reveal reductions in extrinsic tooth stains initiated in the first few days of dentifrice use. This study included subjects with a range of stains and demonstrates effectiveness of Colgate Total (0.3% triclosan, 2% copolymer, advanced silica system) on a wide variety of extrinsic tooth stains.
