Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a difference of the RPM changes in endodontic wireless electronic motors according to the power is supplied from the AC adapter and from rechargeable battery.

Methods:

5 new X-Smart (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) which can be used with rechargeable battery and AC adapter were used in this study. Handpiece with rubber disk which have reflective tape was mounted on the vice. Non contact type digital tachometer, TM-5000 (Line Seiki Co., Tokyo, Japan) was used for measuring the RPM of handpiece. Output of electronic motor was adjusted equally to 300 rpm of rotational speed, 1.0 N/cm of torque value and without autoreverse option. RPM measurements were recorded every 5 minutes to 180 minutes and repeated 3 times per motor with rechargeable battery and AC adapter. To evaluate a difference of the RPM changes, two-way repeated measures were performed using SPSSTM 14.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). All test were conducted in 95 percent confidence level.

Results:

1. There was no significant difference in the amount of RPM changes among the electronic motors with each power source. (p>0.05)

2. There was no significant difference in the amount RPM changes between battery mode and AC adapter mode. (p>0.05)

Conclusion:

In the limitation of this study, the results showed that continuous using of X-Smart with rechargeable battery up to 180 minutes could be safely used as a endodontic wireless electronic motor with a reliable RPM maintenance.
