Results of chair side maintenance care on newly permanent teeth

Objectives:Despite improvement of the dental service, Korean people's oral health status is bad as compared with other OECD countries. Especially, Prevention of primary school children's dental caries is most important because the newly formed permanent dentition has started at this age. But,the results of the maintenance oral health care programs has a little. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of oral health care at dental clinics, including a dental caries activity test and preventive treatments with dental hygienist,on 6-to 13-year old.

Methods:The dental surveys, initial caries control and some dental caries activity tests (CAT)of alblan's test and mutans streptpcocci were performed by dental hygienists along with dentist on children from 6-13 year old at S private dental clinic in Gwangju during 12 months. There were 39 children in the sample, 18 in the oral health care group(OHCG) and 21 in the control group(CG). All samples had received parental permission. The significant difference of CAT and DMF index was analyzed by ANCOVA etc in the effectiveness of maintenance care.

Results:The results of the caries activity test score was reduced 1.4-1.6 times in OHCG(P=0.029). The Oral Hygiene Simplified Index of OHCG was reduced 1.6 times between 6 months and one year. The DMFT index of OHCG was reduced more than 1.4 times compared to CG after one year.

The DT index of OHCG was reduced more than 12 times that of the CG after one year.The dental health capacity of the first permanent molar of OHCG was reduced more than 1.02 times that of CG after one year(P=0.018).This programs has evalauted simple and short time for clinically demanding condition.

Conclusions: Results demonstrated that this programs of chair side oral health care should be reinforced to dental clinics for children with including patents'awareness and expanded national health insurance system.Several factors such as parents'income,oral hygiene habit,number of recall times,etc were associated this program.
