Reduction of Denture Cleansing Agent on Oral Malodor and CFU
S.Y. KIM, S.K. KIM, B.H. JIN, J.-H. YANG, and D.I. PAIK, Seoul National University, South Korea | Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reduction effect of denture cleansing agent against oral malodor and bacterial growth. Methods: 30 Subjects (over 55 years of age) were prepared removable upper maxillary retainers. Subjects were put on retainers in a mouth during 1 hour after ingestion of granulated garlic powder(1g). Retainers were incubated inside completely sealed poly pack (24 hrs, 37°C). Volatile Organic Compounds(VOC) of the gas in poly pack were measured with Oralchroma. After incubation retainers were rinsed with distilled water (DW) as a control and with denture cleanser included Everlase (Polydent) and the content of VOC were measured. The retainers were also rinsed with DW and denture cleanser after put on mouth for 1 hr. CFU was checked from 1ml of each solution incubated 48 hrs at 37°C in BHI. CFU were compared with the reduction effect on oral bacteria. Results: The reduction rate of oral malodor was 67.4% in DW and 88.0% in denture cleanser. The recovery rate of oral malodor after 24 hrs incubation was 62.8% in DW and 60.8% in denture cleanser. And the reduction rate of CFU was 78.63% in DW and 92.09% in denture cleanser. Conclusions: This study shows that denture cleansing agents were more effective than DW in reduction of oral malodor (p=0.17), CFU(p=0.008) and in recovering of oral malodor (p=0.46). | Seq #306 - Malodor, Dentifrice, Rinses 1:45 PM-3:00 PM, Saturday, July 5, 2008 Metro Toronto Convention Centre Exhibit Hall D-E |
