Objectives: Low level lasers”(LLL) are one of the suggested means used to improve the healing and prevent the surgical complications. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of diode laser on post extraction healing. Methods: This sequential randomized double blind study was performed in department of oral surgery of dental Azad university, (35 males,16 females) with the mean age was 44.3 years old (n=51)who had minimum of 2 symmetric teeth to be extracted in one jaw were selected .The inclusion criteria was neither having systemic diseases nor taking any antibiotics throughout previous week ,and not taking any anti inflammatory drugs and not having any oral delayed healing as well . We utilized a 660nm Diode laser (Azor-2k® ,Azor medical equipments;Moscow ,Russia), irradiation characteristics: dose = 4j per socket, power= 25mw, exposure time= 160s.Each jaw split randomly into case (irradiated by laser ) and control ( not irradiated) groups (Split mouth technique) . The experimental site was irradiated only once after the extraction and control site was falsely lased (placebo effect ) . The follow ups :72 hours and 1 week after extraction and the healing progression was evaluated using “Healing scale “ according to the literature s: 0= healed well,1-2=inflamed 4-5=clot breakdown, 7-8=Dehiscence ±pus ,9=not healed data analysed by Mann - whitney and Wilcoxon tests . Results: Statistical analysis demonstrated: healing in first and second recalls, in lased group were significantly superior compared to placebo group :(p<0.01) (p<0.000)respectively. first recall of males irradiated sites showed significantly better healing compared to that of females (p<0.001), same findings didn`t observe in placebo group. no significant differenceobserved between the age groups (20-35,35-50,50 and over ) . Conclusion: We concluded that LLL irradiation significantly improves the healing of extraction socket ,we suggest 4j / socket as an appropriate dose for this aim .
