Bond Strength of One-Component Self-Etching Adhesives

OptiBond All-In-One is a one-component self-etching adhesive, which combines the essential ingredients needed for etching, priming, and bonding into one material, thereby drastically simplifying clinical procedures and reducing technique variability.  During the past years, several one-component self-etching adhesives were commercialized.  Objectives: To evaluate shear bond strength (SBS) to dentin and uncut bovine enamel of OptiBond All-In-One and several commercial one-component self-etching adhesives, including iBond Self-Etch (Heraeus-Kulzer); AdheSE One VivaPen (Ivoclar Vivadent); GO (SDI); and Adper Easy Bond (3M-ESPE).  Methods: Dentin substrates were polished with 600 grit SiC paper and bovine enamel substrates were pumice-cleaned prior to bonding.  Each adhesive was applied (n=6) according to manufacturer's instructions.  Herculite XRV (Kerr) was then condensed into the mold (D=2.38mm) of a bonding jig and light-cured.  The SBS was tested after storage in de-ionized water (37°C, 24 hours).  Results: Shear bond strength (SBS) and results of ANOVA analysis are shown in Table 1.  For dentin, the SBS of All-In-One and Easy Bond are not significantly different (p>0.05) from each other, but are significantly higher than others (p>0.05).  For uncut bovine enamel, the SBS of All-In-One, VivaPen and GO are not significantly different (p>0.05) from each other, but are significantly higher than others (p>0.05).

Conclusions:  The bonding efficacies of OptiBond All-In-One are comparable to or better than other commercial one-component self-etching adhesives.
