Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of surface sealants in: microleakage composite restorations, superficial roughness and hardness of a composite.

Methods: For the microleakage human molars they were assigned into 3 groups with 16 cavities each, restored with Adper Single Bond 2(3M) adhesive and FiltekZ250(3M) composite. Group 1 (control) polishing with Sof-Lex(3M) discs, whereas BisCover (Bisco) was applied to group 2 and Fill Glaze (Vigodent) group 3, immersed in silver nitrate, developed, then sectioned and giving scores 0 to 3. For the roughness 40 discs with FiltekZ250(3M) photopolymerized for 40 seconds and assigned into 4 groups, Group 1 (control) whereas a diamond bur 3195-F(KG Sorensen) was used in opposite senses for group 2 to obtain a rough surface and the groups 3 and 4 to obtain a rough surface; BisCover(Bisco) and Fill Glaze(Vigodent) were then applied to such groups respectively. The hardness assessment was performed by means of a Barcol durometer. Five measurements were performed on each test specimen. Results: The "Kruskal-Wallis" and "Mann-Whitney" (p-value≤ 0,05) tests. In the microleakage analysis, the assessment of scores of leakage in the groups by regions in percentage occlusal region-G1:score 0=18,5%; score1=77,8%; score 2=3,7%/G2: score 0=92,6%; score 1=7,4%/G3: score 0=100%. Cervical region-G1: score1=18,5%; score 2=14,8%; score 3=66,7%/G2: score 0=14,8%; score 1=59,3%; score 2=14,8%; score 3=11,1%/G3: score 0=3,75%; score 1=96,3%. In the roughness and DP were: Gr1:0,07±0,02; Gr2:2,02±0,25; Gr3:0,31±0,07 and Gr4:0,29±0,08. The superficial hardness analysis measurements and DP were: Gr1:83.8±1.0; Gr2:78,9±1,5; Gr3:69,8±3,5 and Gr4:77,0±2,5. Conclusions: Can be concluded that the tested sealants reduced the marginal microleakage; they reduced the superficial roughness of the composite that had undergone finishing with the diamond bur, and reduced the superficial hardness of the composite. However, BisCover presented lower hardness values than the ones presented by Fill Glaze, this difference was statistically significant.
