On-demand video library system for dental practice with integrated authentication

Objective: The practice in the dental education is very important. There is some methods such as directly and/or videos. However, the demonstration it in practical room is difficult any method. Moreover, it has critical problem with the demonstration matched to progress of every students. The students and faculties are requesting the visual system that supports the student's practice. This time, we developed the on-demand video teaching system for the large number of students at the same time.

Method: There are 104 seats in the simulation practice room (with phantom), and the technical practice room, and 34 dental chairs in the interactive practice room for 95 students in our school. One client every two students was put on the simulation practice room and the technical practice room. In the interactive practice room, the client was put on every dental chairs. Moreover, 105 clients of a portable type are arranged in histology and the pathology practice room. These clients are diskless/fanless "Thin client". Only the server is one, and it takes a charge of all clients. It connects to practical rooms on a specific network. And, the server is co-operated with integrated authentication server (Active Directory).

Result: The on-demand video can be used from not only in practical room but also in the computer room and library of the school. In addition, it is possible to use it from home through the Internet. The teaching materials bring up various topics from rudimentary odontology treatment to an unusual pathology specimen, and then the effect of the practice has improved.

Conclusion: The student can view the teaching material matched to my progress. Moreover, when the practice is late, it is possible to make up arrears by advancing the practice for myself based on the animation teaching material.
