Objectives:To overview the current situation of Odontogenic Infectious Diseases (OID) in mongolian children and to identify main risk factors.

Methods: A retrospective observation study of OID in children aged 0-15 years at the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery of Maternal and Child Health Research Center Hospital (MCHRC) from 1999 to 2006, using the data from a total of 1481 case history records.

Results: A predominance of OID's complications in children was observed in 30.6% from the total number of patients hospitalized at the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery,MCHRC. Due to the anatomical location of OID, submandibular abscess occurred more frequently 27.0%, followed by pterygomandibular 12.0% and massetric abscesses 8.0%.The development of complications of OID: Ludvig's angina was found in 0.1% and retrobulbar abscess in 0.7% cases. OID were dominant in 805 boys than in 658 girls.Risk factors for the OID were found to be caries complications of permanent dentition: 16.0% lower left first and 14.0% lower right first molars; among primary dentition: 8.0% lower right second deciduous molar and of lower left second deciduous molar.

Conclusion: This report is preliminary and does not contribute to knowledge on the cause, prevention, and treatment of OID, but rather provides information on the basic situation of OID in Mongolia. Furthermore, it outlines the necessity for future prospective investigations and preventive measurements.
