Validation of a Persian Version of the Child-OIDP Index

Oral conditions such as dental caries may result in pain, which in turn may lead to consequences on a child's daily life such as taking time off from school or difficulty eating. Although there has been an increase in the development and use of oral health related quality of life measures in the past two decades through the world but it had never been validated in a child population in Iran. Objectives: This study has been carried out in an attempt to contribute to the development and application of a valid and reliable oral health-related quality of life measures in children in Persian (official language of Iran) and evaluation the psychometric properties of the Child-OIDP for use among children in Iran.

Method: Three hundred children aged 11–13 years were selected randomly from state schools in Kerman Province in the South of Iran. A clinical examination was conducted followed by a questionnaire which was developed through a linguistic translation, namely the Child-OIDP. The psychometric properties of the Child-OIDP were evaluated in terms of face, content and concurrent validity in addition to internal and test-retest reliability.

Results: The Persian Child-OIDP revealed very good validity and good reliability. Weighted Kappa was 0.85. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.78. Sixty and two percent of the subjects had an oral impacts on their daily performances especially with their appearance.

Conclusion: This study has showed that the Child-OIDP is a valid and reliable index to be used among 11-13 year old school children in Iran.
