Microbiological Diagnostics in Periodontal Treatment Planning

Sponsored by: Periodontal Research
Description: The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria poses an increasing risk for the development of complicated infections. Despite of that, systemic antibiotics are widely used in periodontal treatment without microbiological testing. Therefore, this lecture aims to provide a rationale for an effective systemic adjunctive antibiotic therapy based on microbiological testing. Topics discussed include: - outcome of adjunctive systemic antibiotic therapies - indication for adjunctive systemic antibiotic therapy and microbiological testing - microbiological test systems - selection of systemic antibiotics - sampling strategies for microbiological testing the information given will ease decision making processes in periodontal treatment planning and will furthermore enhance the awareness for an effective and reasonable use of antibiotics in periodontal therapy.
