Microbiota and Host Genome Interactions in Aggressive Periodontitis

Sponsored by: Periodontal Research
Description: Aggressive Periodontitis (AgP) is an infectious disease of the periodontium that generally affects young adults and causes significant damage to the supporting apparatus of the teeth eventually leading to bone resorption and tooth loss. The risk factors leading to the development of AgP are still somehow mysterious. Is AgP caused by some specific periodontopathogenic bacteria present in the subgingival biofilm? Or is it caused by a hyper-reactive immune system? Or is it all due to a genetic predisposition? The lecture will review the microbiological and genetic basis of Aggressive Periodontitis and will explore how genetic factors may interact with specific periodontopathogenic microbes to determine the typical extensive damage to the periodontium characteristic of AgP. The importance of the genetic-microbiological axis in periodontitis will be discussed in view of the growing evidence suggesting that individual genetic susceptibility may influence the host’s response to infections.
