Periodontitis and Diabetes: a Two-way Relationship

Sponsored by: Periodontal Research
Description: Research findings indicate that a dual pathway between diabetes and periodontitis may exist. This two-way relationship has fostered great interest in the treatment of periodontitis in the context of improved general health for the diabetic patient. Both periodontitis and diabetes affect millions of people worldwide and many patients suffer from both diseases concurrently. The aim of this lunch and learning session is to summarize available biological explanations as to how diabetes may affect periodontal tissue destruction as well as the potential influence of periodontal therapy on glycemic control.
