Nutrition and Oral Health Outcomes Research: State of the Science and Future Directions

Sponsored by: Geriatric Oral Research, Nutrition, Periodontal Research
Description: Cross-sectional and epidemiological studies have demonstrated multi—directional relationships between diet, nutrition and oral disease. There is, however, a paucity of scientifically sound outcome studies on the impact of nutrition and diet on oral health status, as well as the impact of oral disease or dental treatment on diet and nutrition status and related biomarkers. This is, in part, related to the lack of valid biomarkers that demonstrate the association between nutrients or diet and oral disease prevention or management. As a result, the Nutrition Research Group held a Consensus Building Program at the 2007 IADR meeting to identify nutrition outcome variables, categories and primary strategies in order to explore the association between nutrition and oral health. Although variables for these multi-directional relationships were identified, the meeting focused primarily on exploring oral health outcomes of diet and nutrition related health conditions and behaviors. The present proposed hands-on workshop is an innovative and forward thinking approach to continue the consensus building process in order to advance the quality of the scientific research in this area. The workshop will focus on nutrition as the outcome of oral disease(s) or dental treatments, and summarize a priority list of outcome markers and topics for pilot studies, to generate evidence supporting the relationship between nutrition, diet and oral health. The primary objectives of this session, aimed at active researchers in nutrition and oral health research, are: 1. To reach consensus on oral outcome measures for use in the study of the impact of nutrition and diet on oral health status 2. To identify nutrition outcome measures in the study of the impact of oral diseases and dental treatment on diet and nutrition 3. To understand how to evaluate and assess established and new nutrition status parameters for outcomes research 4. To prioritize and reach global consensus on prioritization of pilot studies in nutrition and oral health outcome research
