Recommendations for Conducting Controlled Clinical Studies of Dental Restorative Materials

Sponsored by: Dental Materials
Description: For decades Ryge`s criteria were applied to evaluate the clinical performance of restorative materials and/or operative techniques. Since the nineties, restorative materials have vastly improved clinical performance and any changes over time were not easily detected by the limited sensitivity of the Ryge criteria in short term clinical investigations. Insensitivity, combined with the continually evolving and non-standard investigator modifications of the categories, scales, and reporting methods, has created a body of literature that is difficult to meaningfully interpret and to compare data. Therefore, it is now time to move to a more contemporary one and to set a standard protocol that is internationally accepted so that clinical results can be compared with each other. Between 2004 and 2006 eleven research workers from six countries have worked out a modern clinical approach for study design and evaluation criteria and published the consensus paper in three dental journals. The workshop is designed for all clinicians that plan and conduct clinical trials with both direct and indirect restorations. The objectives of the workshop are (1) to disseminate the information to the scientific community, and (2) to present a web-based training and calibration tool for the new evaluation criteria with lots of clinical cases. At the session the participants have to bring there own lap-top to have the opportunity to use the training and calibration program which will be installed on the spot. The speakers will assist during the practical exercise with the calibration program.
