Metro Toronto Convention Centre Room 718A, Symposium - Group/Division Sponsored
Designing Dental Programs for High-risk Children

Sponsored by: Behavioral Sciences, Cariology Research, Oral Health Research
Description: There has been a lot of interest in North America in providing early preventive and interceptive care for dental caries. Government-sponsored dental programs have tried to address the need for providing care for this patient population, but the mix of services or the design of these programs, at times, does not allow for optimal outcomes. This symposium will look at designing government-sponsored dental programs for a high-risk child population. Defining the High-risk Population provides an introduction to the identification of the population and an outline of this group’s needs. The presentation will provide methodology for defining the group and a clear statement of their dental needs, particularly with respect to dental caries. We have limited the discussion to children since this provides a narrower spectrum and focus. The Value of Early Caries Detection in Enabling Preventive Therapies in Dentistry will provide an overview of the new techniques and devices used for identifying carious lesions. It will look at technology that is currently in use in clinical practice, and not devices that are in development. It will examine new and existing therapies for remineralization once the lesions have been identified. The Role of Fluoride in Prevention of Caries will look at the role that fluoride has played and will continue to play in caries prevention. The presentation will look at methods for application including varnish, topical application etc. It will review the current literature and provide guidance on how to use these therapies in a high-risk children population. Dental Programs That Address the Needs of Children / Applying New Ideas and Program Design to Ontario Government-Sponsored Dental Programs will look at incorporating the ideas and techniques discussed into government-sponsored dental programs. It will provide examples for international application but also look at the situation here in Ontario, Canada where the government delivers dental care to children who are disabled or from low-income families. Objectives: To provide the researcher and clinician with an interest in program design, tools and techniques to improving oral health outcomes in this particular population.
