Meeting Oral Health Needs to Promote the Well-being of the Geriatric Population: Education Research Issues

Sponsored by: Education Research, Geriatric Oral Research, EBDN
Description: In 2005 the World Health Organisation outlined priorities for geriatric oral health (Peterson and Yamamoto, Community Dent Oral Epidemiol 33:81-92). Limited research has been undertaken in the educational aspects of geriatric oral health care in undergraduate, formal postgraduate and continuing professional development. It is timely now to reassess the existing educational systems and training needs of those serving increasingly elderly societies. The principal aim of this proposal is to consolidate the education research agenda for geriatric oral health that has emerged from the AADR symposium held in Dallas, 2008. This IADR symposium proposal offers contributions from different speakers on related issues. The specific aims of this symposium are: to understand the relationships of educational systems to the oral health status, needs and demographics of the geriatric population; to develop a mapping of the workforce involved in the oral well being of the elderly; to explore cross national difference; and to inform future research. Current practice in the education and training of those serving the oral health needs of the geriatric population will be described and a research framework will be proposed for use in the identification of best models (with reference to teaching, learning and assessment). The educational objectives of this symposium are to consolidate a framework for (a) future educational research and (b) the associated educational developments required to meet the oral health needs and well being of the geriatric population. Additionally, opportunities for wider dissemination and publication for this subject area will be enhanced by combining the outcomes of both the AADR and IADR meetings. The symposium is aimed at investigators of all levels. It is anticipated that the symposium will both stimulate interest and facilitate future work in an emerging research area of high importance.
