Periodontal Therapy and Systemic Health Outcomes - What Have We Learned from Intervention Trials?

Sponsored by: Periodontal Research
Description: Data from experimental, observational, mechanistic and epidemiologic studies suggest that the chronic inflammatory burden conferred by severe periodontitis may contribute to the development of a number of pathologic systemic conditions. This symposium will focus on the potential reversibility of these alleged adverse effects based on findings from recent intervention trials. The first speaker, Dr. Garcia, will address the hypothesis that periodontitis is a modifiable risk factor for diabetes mellitus and will discuss the efficacy of different periodontal interventions in improving diabetes-related outcomes. Dr. Michalowicz will focus on obstetrical outcomes and will discuss whether periodontal therapy may lower the incidence of pregnancy complications. Finally, Dr. Tonetti will discuss the effects of periodontal therapy on plasma inflammatory mediators and other atherosclerosis-related outcomes such as endothelial dysfunction. The discussion will (i) re-appraise the postulated causative link between periodontitis and the above conditions, (ii) identify current gaps in knowledge and areas for future research, and (iii) point out the significance of the recent findings from a public health perspective. Target audience: Senior and junior investigators, residents and research students. Goals: Leading researchers in the field of periodontal medicine will provide a summary of findings from recent intervention trials of periodontal therapy, as they relate to the incidence of diabetic, obstetrical and atherosclerosis-related outcomes.
