Bond Strength of OptiBond All-In-One on Enamel
O. BAGATCHENKO, X. CHEN, X. QIAN, and D. TOBIA, Kerr Corporation, Orange, CA, USA | OptiBond All-In-One (Kerr) is
a self-etch adhesive that combines the essential ingredients needed for
etching, priming, and bonding into one material, thereby drastically simplifying
clinical procedures and reducing technique variability. Objectives: To evaluate
the influence of surface treatments on shear bond strength (SBS) of OptiBond
All-In-One on bovine enamel surface. Methods: Bovine teeth were
embedded into acrylic resins with facial surface exposed. In each group, 12 enamel
specimens were used. “Un-cut” bovine enamel substrates were cleaned with
pumice. To obtain “cut” enamel surface, bovine specimens were polished with diamond
burs, followed by cleaning with pumice. For etched substrates, Gel Etchant
(Kerr) was used to etch enamel substrates for 3 s and 15 s, followed by
thorough water rinsing. OptiBond All-In-One adhesive was then applied
according to the manufacturer's instructions. A composite (Herculite XRV, A2, Kerr)
was condensed into the mold (D=2.38mm) of a bonding jig (Ultradent) and
light-cured. The SBS was tested after storage in de-ionized water (37°C, 24
hours). Results: ANOVA analysis revealed that the SBS on all
enamel substrates are not significantly (p > 0.05) different.

Conclusion: Shear bond strength of OptiBond All-In-One on
un-cut and un-etched enamel is as good as that on cut and/or etched enamel.
