Clinical Efficacy of the e-Bright Tooth Whitening Accelerator Home Edition

Objective: To study the effectiveness of an over-the-counter whitening kit containing a whitening film and a proprietary cold light that is to be applied by the patient at home. Methods: A randomized, double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 60 subjects to study the effectiveness of a whitening film containing 6% hydrogen peroxide activated by a cold light applied by the subjects at home (eBright Tooth Whitening Accelerator Home Edition). An identical placebo kit was used as the control. The whitening film and the placebo were applied once daily for 20 minutes for a total of 5 days. The efficacies of whitening (Vita shade and L*a*b* color change) were measured two days after the treatment to allow rehydration of the teeth before evaluation. Results: The color of the teeth improved on average 4.6 (SD 3.9) shades on the Vita shade guide in the treatment group as compared to 1.2 (SD 3.8) shades in the placebo group (p<0.001). The mean Delta-L*, Delta-b* and Delta-a* were 2.2, -2.8 and -0.6, respectively, for the treatment group and 0.0, -0.5 and 0.0 for the placebo group. There were statistically significant differences in Delta-L* and Delta-b* between the treatment and the placebo groups (p<0.001), signifying an improvement in lightness and reduction in yellowness of the teeth in the treatment group. The overall color change (Delta-E*) was 4.5 (SD 7.2) in the treatment group as compared to 1.6 (SD 0.6) in the placebo group (p<0.001). There were no significant adverse effects reported by the patients. Conclusion: The 6% hydrogen peroxide whitening film in combination with a cold light applied at home by the patients significantly improved the shades of the teeth. The whitening treatments resulted in a significant increase in lightness and decrease in yellowness of the teeth after 5 days of a 20 minutes daily application.
